It's been about 16 hrs since the lights of Globen were turned off an while Russians are furious and most everyone pretty satisfied, the Mayor of Kiev, Vitali Klitschko promises the capital of Ukraine to prepare adequately. "I'm incredibly proud of Ukraine and grateful for Jamala and this victory, which is now for all of us so important. Kiev will again host the Eurovision and we will do our best to make the necessary preparations and to hold a competition at the highest level. The local authorities should focus on providing a decent standard of infrastructure, accommodation and guests of the competition, and security in the capital."
The Mayor called The Olympic National Sports Complex (also known as Olympic Stadium) one possible venue for Eurovision Song Contest. Built for the 1980 Olympic games in Moscow it hosted a few football matches. It was renewed and reopened in 2011 after a construction of a roof, and Shakira's concert was the inaugural event. The capacity is now about 70.000. It was used also for Euro 2012 games quarterfinals and the final among other games. Madonna, Red Hot Cjili Peppers, George Michael and many others have performed there.
It's situated in the center of town, close to the main shopping streets and hotels, less than 3 kms from the railway station and under 2 kms from Maydan square. The area around the Olimpiyskiy is filled with hotels, hostels, and apartment rentals. Sounds like a plan!
Update May 16: Also Odessa has out itself out in the competition. It seems though they don't have any suitable venue ready. Chornomorets Stadium could do but would need a roof built first.
