ITALY: SANREMO 2024 - COVERS NIGHT ENDS WITH BOOING AND WHISTLING AS GEOLIER WINS

Last nights highly enjoyable night with generally pretty good covers, some great moments (Angelina Mango, Mahmood, Alfa. Mr.Rain, Ricchi e Poveri etc) ended with audience in Teatro Ariston booing and whistling in disapprove when Geolier was revealed as the winner of the evening. A common Eurovision fan watching might wonder why and what happened? He's Napolitan and the music industry in Naples is its own empire, not mixing that much with the general Italian music scene. They have their own musical heritage, language even. They have superstars who aren't big outside Naples and its region. Geolier is a bit of a cross over artist like Gigi D'Alessio and late Pino Daniele. Then again, Napolitans tend to vote - or so it is accused - a Napoletan artist no matter what. A bit like in the 1980's/90's in Finland gypsies voted gypsy artists to victory in several singing competitions. Sometimes with merit, sometimes not. The same is happening now in Sanremo it seems. Televote...

EUROVISION 2022: WHICH CITIES HAS A CHANCE TO HOST IN ITALY?

After a string of top-10 places since their return to the contest back in 2011 (2nd, 9th, 7th, 21st, 3rd, 16th, 6th, 5th, 2nd) Måneskin managed to finish the business Raphael Gualazzi, Nina Zilli, Marco Mengoni, Il Volo, Francesco Gabbani, Ermal Meta, Fabrizio Moro and Mahmood started nor forgetting Francesca Michielin and Emma. Now it's time to Rai to show what they can do and put the legend "Rai doesn't want to win" to rest for good. Italy has hosted the contest twice before but that was a long time ago and a different concept. In 1965 Naples had the honors in Rai's tv-studios there, and in 1991 originally planned Sanremo changed to Cinecittá studios in Rome due to the Gulf war in the last minute that caused some hick ups to the Italian style already a bit confused organisation. But that was and this is now.  Back then it was much small event and could be held in a theater or big studio but not now. And here comes the problem with Italy: the lack of suitable, bi...

NAPLES: NEW SONGS FROM SAL DA VINCI AND FRANCESCO DA VINCI

BELARUS: WHO GOES TO ROTTERDAM 2020 EUROVISION DECIDED TONIGHT

Belarus is next in line to have its national final for the Eurovision song contest 2020 in Rotterdam tonight. Twelve acts made it through the legendary live auditions and tonight a 50-50 jury-televote will determinate the outcome. Among the artists several familiar names like NAPOLI trying again for the who knows how many times but not as many as AURA, who reaches a total of 12. Anastasiya is back as well.  Glamozda and Pushnova shine above the others with their opposite mood songs with VAL's pop tune for me among these efforts. Zakharik's kinda fun and Yarosh sticks put being the only male with his piano ballad that sounds like off from some movie. Imagine some love scene in a park and again the closing titles running.... Or will AURA finally make it? I wouldn't mind. I guess. There will be 50-50 televote-jury this time.  NAPOLI — Don’t Let Me Down  * Sasha Zakharik — Rocky Road  *** Anastasiya Malashkevich — Invisible  ** CHAKRAS — La-ley-la ...

BELARUS: NATIONAL FINAL FOR EUROVISION 2019 TONIGHT

Belarus is the second to last national final this season (Swedn being the last one as usual on Saturday). This time there will be only a jury vote, and in case of a tie another round of voting.... Let's see if they finally send NAPOLI, or if PROvokatsiya will make it? Alyona sounds like a standard entry for any eastern country though. This blogger kinda likes Aura, but the fan favorite is ZENA. But this is Belarus, anything can happen... Michael Soul - Humanize  ZENA - Like It Eva Kogan - Run BLGN & Mirex- Champion Sebastian Roos - Never Getting Close Alyona Gorbachova - Can We Dream PROvokatsiya - Running Away From The Sun Aura - Čaravala NAPOLI - Let It Go KeySi - No Love Lost

BELARUS: LISTEN TO EUROFEST FINALISTS 2019

Belarus has had its already legendary live auditions and as they were open to anyone this year you got UK Eurovision veteran Daz Sampson, onmipresent MIHAI (even if he pulled out the last minute apparently) and many more creatures.... Some familiar names made the cut again: NAPOLI and PROvokatsiya, along with random Swedish Sebastian Roos, Here are the finalists Michael Soul - Humanize  PROvokatsiya - Running Away From The Sun Eva Kogan - Run Sebastian Roos - Never Getting Close ZENA - Like It Alyona Gorbachova - Can We Dream Aura - Čaravala Emmanuel Imagbe- Champion NAPOLI - Let It Go KeySi - No Love Lost

BELARUS: NATIONAL FINAL TONIGHT FOR LISBON 2018 EUROVISION

Belarus has its national final and it wouldn't be Belarusian final without some extra dtama and controversy. Seven out of 11 selected finalists threated to withdraw when it became known that Ukrainian Alekseev's song didn't quite respect the September 1, 2017 rule. In the end it seems only Sofi Lapina stood for her word and withdrawn while the others are here, despite the accusations the final is rigged to make Alekseev win. Later also accusations for Shuma's song's lyrics that include lines from a traditional Belarusian folk song.  The final songs were selected among 95 submissions and live auditions in January. Half the participants are regulars and have participated before. Let's see if anyone of them can beat Alekseev and stop participating every year..... The songs vary from Adagio's Il Volo-esque light pop opera to Alekseev's overproduced standard modern Eurovision pop and Shuma's pseudo etno, Napoli's and Gunesh's yet another ho...

BELARUS: HERE ARE THE BELARUSIAN ONES FOR 2018 - HAVE A LISTEN

Or rather, most of them seem to be the same old, same old as the list has the usual Napoli and Gunesh and a couple of other familiar names, too, like Lexy Weaver and Anastasiya. And Radiovolna. And throw in some pop opera. Some things never change. Eurofans are already talking about Ukrainian Alekseev. No wonder, it' such a typical Eurovision 2010's in all its good and bad. Call it also fan wank that propably won't set the televoters on fire.  1. ALEN HIT - I don’t сare 2. Adagio - Ты i я (You and Me) 3. Lexy - Ain’t you 4. Sofi Lapina  - Gravity 5. Napoli - Chasing rushes 6. Alekseev - Forever 7. Anastasiya Malashkevich - World On Fire 8. Gunesh - I won’t cry 9. Kirill Good - Deja Vu 10.Radiovolna - Subway lines 11. Shuma - Хмаркі

ESC 2016 POLAND: MARGARET WILL COOL YOU DOWN (AND THE OTHER FINALISTS)

Poland has revelaed today the names for the final and yes, all the rumored ones are in from Margaret to Edyta to Michal. The surprise is Napoli that is bordering ridiculous. They already came 2nd in the Belarusian final this year with the same song. Are there no rules? Taraka is an Ukrainian-Polish band that made headlines over the world with Give Ukraine a helping hand . The Polish final will take place on March 5, 2016.  Anyways, I'm all for Margaret!  Natalia Szroeder – Lustra Edyta Górniak – Grateful Taraka – In the Rain Aleksandra Gintrowska – Missing Michal Szpak – Colour of Your Life Margaret – Cool me down Kasia Mos – Addiction Dorota Osinska – Universal Napoli – My Universe

ESC 2016 BELARUS: WHO WILL WIN IN BELARUS TONIGHT?

Belarus is having its final tonight. Alexey Gross with his pompous anthemic power ballad and Kirill Ermakov, already familiar name from JESC, have emerged as pre-contest favorites. Alexandr Ivanov seem to have some following too, and it wouldn't be the first time Belarus sends a blond long haired simil-rocker. The EM has something going on and could be worked into something. Anastasiya would follow the trend of screaming ladies with heavy beats but it's not all that bad really.... Nicely 90's.  Napoli goes all sugary Disney. Yuk. Quite a few jazzy flirty elevator music pieces are included in the very bland line up. Not forgetting the strong Russian accents :-) You can watch it live from 20.00 CET at eurovision.tv Alexey Gross - Flame   studio Sasha Zakharik - Glory night   studio Valeria Sadovskaya - Not alone   studio Radiovolna - Radiowave (Ne shodi s uma)   studio The EM - Turn around   studio Navi - Gyeta zyamlya (This land)   st...

ESC 2016 BELARUS: HERE ARE THE FINALISTS. LISTEN IF YOU DARE

The Belarusian jury has done its job and hopefully no one suffered any permanent damage. I stopped watching any audition videos after one Hello and a live chicken.... Veterans Alexey Gross, Alexander Ivanov and Napoli made the cut, now it's up to televoting public to send one of them to Stockholm come January 25. Alexey Gross is ready to fight it seems.... Alexander Ivanov - How to fly Valeriya Sadovskaya - Not alone Anastasiya Malashkevich - Pray for love Navi - Gyeta zyamlya Alexey Gross - Flame  ( live ) Kirill Yermakov - Running to the sun  ( live ) Radiovolna - Radiowave (Ne shodi s uma) Sasha Zakharik - Glory night Napoli - My universe  ( live ) The EM (Michael Soul & Egor Sharankov) - Turn around

ESC 2016 BELARUS: ALEXEY GROSS AND 83 OTHERS

Belarus has received 84 songs for their national final, quite a drop from last year's 110. Tomorrow November 26 and December 1 these 84 songs will be performed live for a jury (you can follow it live on tvr.by it seems) that will select the finalists (15) for the national final to be held on January 15, 2016 in Minsk. The names should be out on December 2. In the final there will be televote only and let's see how that will end like. Belarus is famous for scandals and changes and all sort of things before and especially after their national final..... Can they make it right the first time? What will Lukashenko say? Quite many previous wannabes are at it again from Alexey Gross to Janet , Chistyi Golos  and Napoli. And Aura , Sweet Brains ..,  Alexey Gross (pictured) has a long history in the contest, he has taken part most every year lately.... will he finally win? Here are some of his entries: One way love (2013), If I could do it all again (2014), Stand as one (2...

ESC 2015 BELARUS: THE FINAL TONIGHT

Belarus is having its EuroFest final tonight. Alexander Rybak's Milki project is the one to beat, it seems. Wouldn't it be ironic if Uzari with his violin player would beat him? Anyways, there isn't much to write about; mediocre or simply bad songs, Belarusian "English" and propably the singer and/or the song will be changed anyways before mid-March if it isn't Milki, so I will stick to my Christmas relaxing instead of watching this..... Anyways, it starts at 8pm CET and you can watch it live here .  NAPOLI  –  My dreams Lis  –  Angel Daria  -   Love is my colour Gunesh  –  I believe in a miracle Yana Butskevich & Muzzart  –  Tolko tantsuy Valeria Sadovskaya  –  Summer love Rostany  –  Electric toys Janette  –  Supernova Alexey Gross  –  Stand as one Milki  –  Accent Uzari & Maimuna  -   Time Beatris  –  Fighter Vitaly Voronko  –...

ESC 2015 BELARUS: HERE ARE THE FINALISTS. LISTEN IF YOU DARE

Belarus will have its national final on December 26, 2014 and a jury has picked up the 15 finalists after casting auditions. Several familiar names but not Alyona Lanskaya who either didn't pass the casting or didn't participate at all after all. Not that this blogger misses her one bit. As expected the designed winner Milki did it with a song penned by Alexander Rybak. It would a surprise if they didn't win eventually. If they don't, there's always a way to make it happen afterwords. This is Belarus after all. And therefor there's also a lot of broken English and some rather horrid songs in the line up that have no life but in national Eurovision selections. This said, it has been worse so the jury has done quite decent job... Listen with caution:  Gunesh - I believe in a miracle Janette - Supernova Alexey Gross - Stand as one Daria - Love is my colour Valeria Sadovskaya - Summer love Uzari & Maimuma - Time Milki - Accent Yana Butskevich...

ESC 2015 BELARUS: ALEXANDER RYBAK, MR.BELARUS, USUAL NAMES AND OTHER NEWS

Alexander Rybak is working with a girl group to win the Belarusian national final on December 26, 2014. he has been to Belarus and through auditions selected five girls to perform his song, that will be very Belarusian as he says. "I have had this idea to work for my native Belarus for a couple of years now" he says, "I decided to compose a song that shows the Belarusian soul. I think I understand very well the Belarusian people that differ from the other Slavic people. They can be calm and natural. The song features both English and Belarusian and even the costumes are in Belarus style". He says he dedicates as much of his time as possible for the project but being very busy - only four days off before Christmas - he has a team in Belarus working on it and they know what he wants.  Rybak also tells he's closer to Belarus now that he has been there many times, met his relatives who have told him how his life was as a little child in there, but says he has ...

Noa sings Naples and Israel

Noa has released this year two cover albums. First Israeli Songbook , a collection of most loved Hebrew songs performed with Gil Dor and Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra. She pays tribute to the songs that have inspired her and Israeli people the past 50 years, and critics claim this album is one of the finest she has ever recorded and this blogger agrees. But she has also turned back to Italy - remember fantastic La vita é bella? - with a collection of Napoletan songs, Noapoles - Noa sings Napoli performed with Gil Dor and The Solis String Quartet. Already back in 2005 she released with Gil an album Napoli-Tel Aviv performing the songs in Hebrew but this time she goes with the original versions and the result is fantastic. And she has had success in Italy the past 20 years already. Highly recommended if you like that kind of music. She's currently touring Israel with the Israeli Songbook concerts. Listen here , here , and here .
