One of the most legendary Motown tracks. The "No hit" Supremes scored their first #1, in August 1964. Their success was such that also the next four singles went to #1 and the trio became the most succesful girl group ever . Diana Ross, Mary Wilson and Florence Ballard apparently weren't so keen on the song first but after string of non succesful singles they didn't really have a say and went on to record it. Mike Valvano stomped his feet at the studio floor and the rest is history, as they say. Just like with My guy/My girl , also this song got a brotherly version when Four Tops released I can't help myself (Sugar pie honey bunch) , another #1 hit for Motown in 1965. The melody line is almost identical.
