  Greece - Katerine Duska - Better love **** Now this is classic Eurovision, in a good way: the prop, the look, the dancers. But it's all done with an excellent taste not even bordering kitch. It's beautiful to see and everything works nicely. The song itself then isn't typical Eurovision, at least not for Greece, but it fits in. I don't see why the jurors and the televoters both wouldn't vote this a lot. A qualifier and maybe reaching top-10 or who knows even higher in lack of strong female songs this year.   San Marino - Serhat - Say na na na *** Oh well, what to say? I like the song and the staging in all its colorfulness and catchy kitchiness and the overal package is good. Yet I can't ignore the vocals, even if I'd like to. Hopefully Serhat will sound better come live broadcast and proper audio but now he's the weakest thing going on. With the little amateurish choreography I must add. But this is San Marino! Say na na na and love it!...

We have seen it all at Eurovision over the decades. Or so we think until someone brings something unseen before to the stage. This year it is Australia. We've had people on sticks and monocycles, but never before the artist herself on a swinging pole. Thumbs up to Kate!  Little drummer boy brings us back to 2004-05 era. Heaven & hell told by a monk. Flying above it all.   From angel to beast in 30 seconds. Storm. Never a dull moment in this 2nd half, is there? Opens up like a flower. Pretty in pink, vol.2

The Turkish Sammarinese by adoption tries his luck for the second time in Eurovision and who knows, he might make it to the final this time and even if doing so, Valentina Monetta remains the one and only Sammarinese artist to do so. Say Na Na Na is what he does best: dated disco pop with old fashioned female backing singers over his husky half spoken performance. In some weird way it works. This is feelgood music, hilariously kitchy without being banal and somehow Serhat manages to make himself likable like a DILF of the fandom. Closing the first semi-final this could be what televoters had been waiting for: something instantly recognisable and fun, what most people think Eurovision is all about. There have been countless Muslim artists in Eurovision over the years but it hasn't and it shouldn't matter but this year it gets more attention as the contest takes place in Tel Aviv, Israel, and three artists have been spotlighted as Muslims and represent the new multicultural Europe. France's Bilal Hassani is of Moroccan origin, while Italian Alessandro Mahmoud is half Egyptian which caused a rasistic and political outburst when he won Sanremo festival despite him being born and raised in outskirts of Milan and identifying himself as 100% Italian. Maybe it's also due to the line in Arabic in his song taken out of context? Apparntly the only Arabic h knows. And then we have of course Turkish Serhat, back in business for San Marino. He's a real new European living and working between Germany, France, UK and Turkey. From 16 to 54, that's the (known*) age range of this year's Eurovision song contest in Tel Aviv.  Zena from Belarus is the youngest turning 17 in September while San Marino's very own Turk Serhat will celebrate his 55th birthday in October. Malta's Michela, Belgium's Eliot and Croatia's Roko are also born in the 2000's. The oldest artists besides Serhat come from the north: Finland's Darude (43) and Sebastian Rejman (41) with Tom Hugo (39) of Norway's KEiiNO. They're also the only artists born in the 1970's (and  Serhat the only one in the 1960s). Nineteen artists were born in the 1990s - 1994 being the most common year (Ester, Luca, Nevena, Duncan, Srbuk and Sarah). Thirteen were born in the 1980's with 1989 having the most (Katerine, Oto, Lake Malawi's Albert, Paenda, Conan and Fred of KEiiNO).  One could say it's a very youthful edition.
