The official single's chart that you can find here differs quite a lot from what the radios play proving the streaming audience is not the same as radio listening audience. Needless to say this blogger is a lot more in tune with the radio waves. Even if they played mostly only Nelli Matula's UMK 2025 entry and BEHM... And Ed Sheeran being the only non Finnish chart topper in 2025! Tommi Läntinen (62) returns with Eurovision hopes having taken part in the 2015 selection with Mitä vaan , placing second to last in his heat. But he has made his career elsewhere. First with bands like Boycott and Fabrics since 1979, and then already almost 30 years as a solo singer in Finnish. Eight albums and several compilations as soloist, a dozen albums with various bands he's been around and known for decades. His biggest hits are Via Dolorosa , Syvälle sydämeen sattuu and Kevät ja minä , and latest minor radio hit is from last summer, Meidän murusia . He will release a new studio album after UMK, his first in ten years. His song Elämä kantaa mua is written by Haloo Helsinki's Leo and Jere, with Elli in the lyrics. Haloo Helsinki has been the most popular pop rock band in Finland for years and this is the first song they have written for someone else so there's a certain buzz and expectations about this one but I must admit neither Haloo Helsinki nor Läntinen belon...

YLE has been very, very quiet about the coming UMK2019 - so much that fandom is creating such a fuss about it in chat rooms and message boards that even the tabloids are starting to talk about it. Last year this time we already knew Saara Aalto was selected in a surprise twist and YLE angered most everyone who had submitted songs to the selection that was cancelled just like that. Lack of any information or hints only fuels the idea YLE is clueless what to do or simply won't get anyone decent. The only thing known so far is that the selection will take place on March 2, 2019 somewhere, with someone with three songs. When UMK boss Anssi Autio was interviewed about it the whole affair can be summed up in this way: He didn't comment the No comment line of comments he gave to most every question. The Finnish Grammys aka Emma awards were handed out this weekend in Espoo's Metro Areena and between performances by likes of Jenni Vartiainen, JVG, Haloo Helsinki!, Antti Tuisku and other cream of the cream of Finnish music business right now the awards were handed out. Haloo Helsinki! picked up seveal ones, as did Cheek and Antti Tuisku. It's September and the Eurovision 2018 season is officially on. I will feature in coming days names that could be in UMK18, if only...... I say if only, as most likely we won't see any of them in there for UMK is profilied as a newcomers contest instead of being our own Sanremo or Melodifestivalen. In short: a major contest all the big names want to take part not only to win but to boost their record sales and score hits. But one can dream, right? I have thrown in some not so known names for variety. Let's go.... The nominees for the best video. The winner will be voted by the public in this category. Four out of ten are also nominated for the best song.... Among them UKM host Roope Salminen, tongue twisitng SAARA, JVG and now also JVG's VilleGalle in another video....  And way too much Finnish humour rap here, too. Thank heavens there's Chisu at least!

Sweden's Melodifestivaen brings together every year the big names, well known names, a few new names and mixes a show that appeals to most Swedes - and not only. UMK in Finland has been changing from ... well, I don't know what it was ment to be really. In the current form no big names seem to be willing to be part of it, and if we think these years it has been running it has produced only one star: Krista Siegfrids, and Softengine to some level. Mikko Pohjola was ment to become big for example, but nothing happened. From last season's finalist NONE made any impact in the charts or music industry and all are already forgotten. Sad but true.  So, let's play with the idea UMK was actually remodelled with MF style. Big names, four semifinals and all. Aikuinen (or Pekka Eronen) may not be a household name but he has written lyrics to other artists (Haloo Helsinki and Irina just to name a couple) so far and then he "had songs that were unsuitable for anyone else so I had to sing myself" as he puts it. He is also known as a movie critic. Writing music is a way of living for him, he would go nuts without it. His debut single Partajaana (liberally translates to Bearded Jane) got minor attention and he plans to go on with this kind of music that is melancholy but nice to dance to. If he wins he will bring that bearded single of his to Conchita Wurst, she'd propably appreciate it. But for #umk15 he offers us a drink called Kyynelten lahti (Bay of tears) Jack: Now I can completely understand that some people won't like this but I think it's cute. The video-clip is hilarious, weird and intriguing. I can't understand word and I know the song sounds rather dated although I do like it. I can't help myself...

Emma, the Finnish Grammy award nominations have been revealed today. Among the various nominees in different categories we have Softengine , the band that scored 11th in Copenhagen Eurovision 2014. They have been nominated as the newcomer of the year, and they are also among the nominees in the People's Choice award. In newcomers they fight it againt Arion , from UMK 2013. Jari Sillanpää has three nominations: Schlager album of the year, Male artist of the year and he's also listed for People's Choise. Another Eurovision veteran Katri Helena is still going strong; she scored also nomination in Schlager album of the year and also Female artist of the year. Diandra , Idol winner and UMK participant is also nominated for the Female artist of the year and People's Choice. Finally we have Tango King and national selection participant Amadeus Lundberg up for Peoples Choice. Also UMK judge Redrama and national final participant Samuli Edelmann are nominated. The...

The numbers are out and nicely filling the summer gaps in the news. Despite the economical situation and the changes in the music business Finnish music seems to be doing resonable well, at least the big names. The unthinkable of doing stadium gigs is no longer unthinkable when Cheek will have two sold out Olympic stadium gigs this summer and nine out of 10 best selling albums in 2013 in Finland are Finnish and in Finnish. If we count in the compilation albums of Tv-series Vain elämää (Only life or rather C'est la vie) it's a top-11 finish for Finnish music. Robin: Boom kah 83.446 (multi platinum) Teen sensation Robin continues to sell. Album features hits like Boom kah , Erilaiset and Onnellinen . he has just released a new song for the summer (promoting the use of condom btw, already a tradition in Finland) titled Kesärenkaat . In 2012 the second most played one was Loreen's Euphoria , but this year Eurovision winner is nowhere to be seen. Krista Siegfrids is at no.68 with Marry me . The Ice Hockey World Champion songs dominated the charts in 2011 and they all made it to the list but so did Paradise Oskar's Eurovision song. Fun rappers Petri Nygård, Lord Est and Jare & VilleGalle made a mark as well as did Chisu, Erin and Arttu Wiskari and even Jenni Vartiainen, whose number one of 2010 made it still to #12 in 2011 (similar fate of being on top in two years might wait Chisu's Kohtalon oma ). It is rather significant there are only a very few songs in English, highest them being Lauri's Heavy at #13. The biggest names in the Finnish music business from Chisu to Lauri Tähkä, from Lauri to Anna Abreu , from Haloo Helsinki to Sunrise Avenue , from Kim Herold to Paradise Oskar with LeKid from Sweden are playing tonight live in Hartwall Areena to raise money for the children hospitals. This annual event is more alive than ever and besides beforementioned artists names like Arttu Wiskari, Fintelligens , Idols winner Martti Saarinen , Pasa and Ronya will be performing. The concert is also live on TV from 8pm local time on MTV3.

And yet some more favourites of mine: Antti Tuisku - Hyökyaalto Lassi Heiskanen - Sut tahdon kokonaan Haloo Helsinki - Maailman toisella puolella Manna - She moves Antti Tuisku needs no presentations but Lassi Heiskanen is a total newcomer. Haloo Helsinki has provided one of the biggest summer hits with this song off their third success album. Manna is a Finnish-Algerian singer, songwriter, model and actress and has already released three albums as well and could be the closest thing to Kate Bush we have here - at least in this video.
