Life after Helsinki 2007 Eurovision

  Kim Wilde is one of those artists I have followed more or less ever since she came out, with her ups and downs in career and in my interest. And not so long ago she wonderfully surprised me with her new release Pop don't stop that would have been even a great Euroviison entry for the UK. It even runs under 3 minutes! If only....

I was a huge Nena fan. Huge. Yet strangely it wasn't 99 Luftballons , their international smash hit that made it, never liked that one so much. Thanks to them I took German as 4th language at school over French in a similar fashion kids today learn Finnish because of the heavy rock bands... sort of. I loved non hit songs like Ich häng an dir and Der Anfang vom Ende .  Nena split, Nena herself went solo and I slowly lost interest while new versions of the songs came and went by..... Kim Wilde has been around since 1980 and sold 10 million albums and 20 millions singles and has had her ups and downs, and has had her own gardening show in television and has hosted radio programmes. Rleased 14 studio albums, scored 7 top-10 singles in the UK and one US #1. And she's still going strong with her latest album Here come the aliens released this spring. She tours Europe and is a household name most everywhere thanks to classics like Kids in America , Cambodia , You keep me hanging on , You came , If I can't have you ..... I have been a fan since 80's and still think it wouldn't be too late for her to do it, should BBC go internal.... Below is her smashing pop anthem Pop don't stop - it even clocks 3'00.....   Finland celebrates its 100th year as an independent state and has ever since searched for its place in Europe and the world, between East and West. Sometimes with less success. As we speak in 1939 we were at war again with Soviet Union but - let's make a huge change of subject here -  since 1961 Finland has been taking part in the Eurovision song contest (and we also took part, and won twice, the copycat contest behind the Iron curtain, Intervision song contest). It may have taken awhile before we won, but it never stopped us taking part. EBU did, in those crazy 1990's-early 2000's. One of the most well known Motown and The Supremes songs is from 1966. It's also their 7th #1 in the US, a step to a more sophisticated and adult sound as it is said. Its lyrics are losely inspired by a 1950's gospel song (You can't hurry God) He's right on time . It was recorded in a same session wit You keep me hanging on , their 8th #1 hit. The most famous cover is Phil Collins ' UK #1 version. He told his aim was to do a remake, to recreate the Motown sound even if with the new sophisticated recording facilities it was very hard.  Other notable covers include Dixie Chicks , The Stray Cats , Ché Chesterman ,  You keep me hanging on was a #2 Uk and #1 US , Australia and Canada hit for Kim Wilde

Today has been all about United Kingdom and BBC's possible choice for Malmö 2013 Eurovision. The names have been flying like there's no tomorrow but apparently it's going to be a power ballad by a female singer. Is it going to be already previously rumored Kimberley Walsh of Girls Aloud? Or a local favorite and ex-child star Bonnie Langford ? Or another, better known Bonnie 'Total exlipse of the heart' Tyler , a new name to the race?! Or Kim Wilde , this blogger's eternal favorite to do Eurovision but how will be put that with a power ballad? That could be easily handled though by Shirley Bassey , a Bond themes legend and certainy would be a classy pick. And then we have also Alesha Dixon , ex-Mis-teeq and Strickly come dancing winner...  Time and BBC will tell in coming days who it's going to be... after Engelbet Humperdinck anything is possible!
