Franco Battiato was very much considered as a Sicilian artist besides Italian and after his professional adventures up north in Milano he returned to his beloved Sicily under the shadow of Mount Etna where he was born. Now Riposto (ex-Ionia) where he was born, Milo up the Etna hill where he had his house for decades and where he died plus the capital of region Catania all have plans to commemorate the music legend.
"The spectacular nature of our lungomare (waterfront) that visually unites Etna with the Ionian sea, in the context of the lava rock of the ancient eruptions of our volcano - explained Mayor of Catania Pogliese - will become a symbol of a man, an artist who has magnificently interpreted the values of nature, transcending the borders of Sicily and Italy for its innate ability to grasp the deepest feelings of humanity. The great emotion that the death of Franco Battiato aroused throughout Italy convinced us that to remember a personality who has marked the feelings of generations of citizens, it was necessary to name him a place that remember his artistry and great love for our city, which he demonstrated from a young age ".
The mayor also announced that a large image of Franco Battiato created by street art artists will be placed on the Lungomare and that the naming of the Lungomare after the Sicilian musical genius will not change the existing names. The mayor of Catania finally announced that the naming of the Lungomare does not preclude other places in the city, evocative from an artistic, cultural and naturalistic point of view, from being dedicated to Franco Battiato.
But Catania is not the only one.
"Franco Battiato, the best fellow citizen we have ever had. Riposto gave birth to him and he grew up there for the adventures in the streets of the world that led him to be a universal figure. We will name him a large square facing the sea so he will be able to see both the sea and the Etna that he loved so much ". The mayor of Riposto, Battiato's hometown, Enzo Caragliano, told the journalists in front of the master's villa in Milo.
