The Swiss have put some more serious effort to their selection Entscheidungsshow ESC 2018 this year and gone is the open online submission and that nonsense that never worked. Gone are - already years ago - the good old times when the Swiss final had 3 songs in French, 3 in German, 3 in Italian and then one in Romansh. Sadly, only one song ever in that language made it to Eurovision, but it was at homeground in 1989 when Furbaz won with Viver senza tei.
This year songs have been sought from all over, but as often in Eurovision it's the usual subjects among the authors and here there are several among them. I must admit I have no favorite among them, any could do. If Swiss follows this year's trend they will choose Chiara's simple semi acoustic number. Or even Alejandro's little tune. But the four other have equal chances I suppose. Unless people go crazy for the Symphonix sound and fame, even if the song is far inferier to the two previous ones they have given to Eurovision. This said, this is the best Swiss selection I can remember - even if it misses the highlight.....
Zibbz - Stones
Brother and sister Gfeller have co-written their song with Canadian Laurell Barker, who co-write two of the songs in the UK selection last year; I wish I loved you more and Freedom hearts.
Angie Ott - A thousend times
Angie is a Voice of Switzerland runner up and the song is written by Swedish Jonas Gladnikoff and Sara Ljunggren with Malta's Eurovision veteran Glen Vella.
Naeman - Kiss me
Naeman is Dutch born Swiss, who also has participated in various talent shows from Switzerland's Got Talent to German Idol, but he has also been a street performed all over the globe from South Korea to the US. His song is written by Americans Kate Northtrop and Eric Lumiere with Swedish Ken Berglund and his Swiss competitor Alejandro Reyes.
Chiara Dubey - Secrets and lies
Chiara is already in the Swiss final for the thrid time and for the first time she drops Italian and sings sadly in English. Her song is written by herself with multinational team Janie Price, Jeroen Swinnen, Darcy Proper and Sally Herbert. These people have written or worked with Tom Dice's Me and my guitar, Florence+The Machine and Kylie Minogue among others and have even won a Grammy!
Alejandro Reyes - Compass
Also Chilean born Alejandro is no stranger to the Swiss selection and he has co-written his song with Laurell Barker (see Zibbz above) and Lars Christen. Disability of his left hand hasn't stopped him becoming a musician and guitar player.
Vanessa Iraci - Redlights
Vanessa also has reality show past, and her song is written by international Symphonix team (Boris Milanov, Joacim Bo Persson, Johan Alkenäs, Jessica Ashley Karpov and Jesse Saint John) who have brought Bulgaria to 4th and 2nd place in the two most recent Eurovisions. Apparently they are also behind the Austrian entry this year.
