LIVE: SANREMO 2018 - LA PRIMA SERATA

Tonight's the night. The 68th Sanremo festival starts and runs for the usual five nights until Saturday's final when we will know the winner of the Big category, and thus the Italian entry for the Eurovision as well. In theory. More information here.
This year no one is eliminated and they all reach the final, but during the evenings we can follow a bit how the voting is going. Tonight's voting is 40% televoto + 30% demoscopic jury + 30% accredited media. In the end we will know the partial results given in three groups: those on top, those in the middle and those at the bottom, giving us a little hint how the things are progressing....
Annalisa opens the competition and Le Vibrazioni are the last ones to perform. I will watch and comment live each and every song, so please stay tuned and check in time to time :-)
Among tonight's guest Fiorello, Gianni Morandi with Tommaso Paradiso and sadly no Laura Pausini, who's been put down to bed by laringhite :-( but no worries: She should be present on Saturday night!

------------------------------------------------- L I V E ---------------------------------------------------------

20.44 Here we go...... with the song sung by all the artists in a colorful video! Then enter Fiorello to warm up the audience with his half comedy and imitation act . The stage looks modern and beautiful, the orchestra is all dressed in white giving a nice extra to the stage in whole. It seems that even the first rows of the audience chairs are white! Actually they havee taken away a good 13 rows of chairs to give space to the stage.
Fiorello continues imitating the host Claudio Baglioni and tonight's guest, Eurovision veteran Gianni Morandi. Maybe he could just go ona sing all the songs tonight? I wouldn't mind. Fiorello is fab!

20.58 Enter Claudio Baglioni and the stage reveals one of its secret: amazing staricase that comes down from the wall. Talk about a grand entrance! Afteer his speech about his idea about music, Sanremo and the whole affair he welcomes everyone and off we go for a first break!
21.12 Enter Pierfrancesco Favino.... and then Michelle Hunziker! She stops the guys useless small tak and being Swiss starts explainign they have timetable and need to end the show in time, and goes on explaining the rules and voting procedure and all the important things. And we are ready to start for real!

Purple stage, black short dress, a feew camera tricks. Well sung, melodic typical Italian melody but yet quite modern. Eurovisionality: ****

21.23 Ron – Almeno pensami
A song written by late Lucio Dalla. Beautiful, poetic and acoustic. Friday night this will be sung in duet with Alice. Stage is blue, green and turquoise. Simple and effectic. Propably juries will push this up where it belongs, not sure how much people will vote for it. Or maybe they do because of the legend Dalla is. Can't wait to heear this in duet with Alice, then it will work for me for sure :-). Eurovisionality: **
Meanwhile Michelle is really taking charge of the situation and doing a marvellous job, always smiling and giggling as she does. And handling any hic ups with professionality. If Italy should ever host Eurovision......

21.30 The Kolors – Frida
First time in Italian this band. Rocky and up beat, completely different from the two before. Sounds kinda catchy but I have never been a big fan of them. Colorful stage and wardrobe, big drums on stage. Eurovisionality: **** perhaps (but propably if they should go, this could be in English?)
After Michelle talks with the public and finds her husband to kiss Pierfrancesco finally gets a chance to do something and present the next artist... but we love Michelle so it's not a problem.

21.39 Max Gazzè – La leggenda di Cristalda e Pizzomunno
Colorful stage also for Gazzé and his musical number. Ballady and serious instead of his often up beat and humorous songs. I'm not sure if I like this at all. I mean, personally. I hear its values but it's not my cup of tea really. Eurovisionality: *
After Gazzé again ad break....
21.50 Laura Pausini!!! Ah no, lol, after all. Enter Fiorello. With his jokes, imitations and laughter :-) And then all of sudden in the middle of a political gag there "Pronto? Pronto?" in the air, and it's Laura herseelf, clearly without voice. Poor thing. Claudio and Fiorello comfort her by singing a duet, where Fiorello imitates Claudio...... As it is, and Laura non c'è, they maybe could have cut this part and continue wit the songs? It's been over an hour and we have heard only four songs, 16 to go.....
But as it seems it was a huge success in Teatro Ariston. And Sanremo reigns in social meedias globally....

22.09 Ornella Vanoni, Bungaro, Pacifico - Imparare ad amarsi
The grand lady, 83, with the younger generation. Hauntingly beautiful, simple staged and well sung. Nice lyrics, a lot of turquoise, heer in white dress. What's there not to like? Eurovisionality: ****

22.17 Ermal Meta & Fabrizio Moro - Non mi avete fatto niente
The favorites. And no wonder. Black and red, a lot of important words. catchy chorus. Effective. Powerful. The best so far by far. Their voices are strong and mix well. Eurovisionality: ****

22.23 Mario Biondi - Rivederti
The first thing that came to my mind was La la land. Mario's jazzy night club song is something else. Hard to say how this will do.. Eurovisionality: * or *****. after Sobral everything's possible!
Another ad break.
22.31 It's time for Pierfrancesco to shine on stage..... Words, words, words.... (after all it's all about music and words)... he bursts out singing. Maybe this is supposed to be funny, but... No. He then burst out imitating among others Eros Ramazzotti and Michelle is on stage asking "Of all songs, you do this?" Eros is her eex-husband.....
Meanwhile I'm thinking that having so many men among artists and only four women it's a bit boring to watch: they are mostly all in black, more or less elegant. We need ladies in gorgeous evening gowns and colors! Michelle alone just isn't enough....

22.43 Roby Facchinetti-Riccardo Fogli – Il segreto del tempo
Badly song, out of sync. Thee close ups didn't do any favors. Slow and boring. Never liked Facchinetti's way of singing and Fogli seemed to suffer all through the song. Clearly the worst one so far. Eurovisionality: zero

22.50 Lo Stato Sociale – Una vita in vacanza
Very 80's and they certainly stand out in look department. Granny dancers. Interesting arrangement. Russian choirs. What this didn't have?! Now this will be interesting to see where this goes... Not that I liked it though. But it made me smile, even if I don't know quite why? Eurovisionality: *
Ad break gives us time to digest those four minutes....
22.59 Michelle's turn to showcasee her shaky vocals and sing. Her shoe gets stuck in some box and Claudio and Pierfrancesco need to get her a new show: Claudio's 47. Well, it was sympa, no?

Guess what? She's in black. Her song is a typical Noemi song, heard about a zillion times already. Okeish. Nothing special. Her voice is what it is, you like it or you dont. Eurovisionality: ***
Oh my: After that Michelle reminds that the winneer goes to Eurovision!

23.10 Decibel – Lettera dal duca
Eurovision veteran Enrico Ruggeri return with his band from the late 70's and 80's.  Guitar pop rock with a clear melody and some lines in English for some reason. Not the worst for sure but a bit unoriginal and heard before as well. Eurovisionality: **
Have I said I love the graphics this year? They are fab!

23.22 Elio e le storie tese – Arrivedorci
The humor band that already quit. And now reunite for the last time to quit for good. Hopefully. Tonight dressed as Indians. Never got them. Not even now. Eurovisionality: zero
I enjoyed more the touristic promotional film of Liguria that followed :-)

23.29 Giovanni Caccamo – Eterno
Battiato's protegée and Newcomers winner 2015 (and third among Big in 2016) is back. Classic Sanremo song. I do like Caccamo but maybe he was a bit nervous tonight? Eurovisionality: ****

23.34 Red Canzian – Ognuno ha il suo racconto
Finally some color: he has reddish jacket. What a surprise: a perfect pop rock song, if sung by Annalisa for example this would be perfect for Eurovision. he sings well and really cemented his ex-collegues from i Pooh (Facchinetti & Fogli). I'm confused. Eurovisionality: ***
Eurovision veteran sing in his own, Roman, dialect. The music has folk elements, and makes me think of a movie soundtrack, Roman alleys and hidden streets and corners in a hot summer evening. Lovely song! Eurovisionality: *****
Time for a break. Again.
23.53 Back in Ariston. We stay in theme as it's time for a tributo for Italian film music, Il Postino. With Eurovision veteran Gianni Morandi, and Claudio. Morandi looks more and more like Finnish Eurovision veteran Viktor Klimenko.... even the jacket! Pure Napoli 1965!
Next he sings with Tommaso Paradiso of TheGiornalisti...

00.10 Diodato e Roy Paci – Adesso
This gave me nothing. Repetitive and even if it grows and grows somehow it goes nowhere. Meh. Green jacket a plus.  Eurovisionality: *

00.16 Nina Zilli – Senza appartenere
Nina looks stunning in her white dress. Sadly her song is maybe the worst I have ever heard from her, and I'm a fan. Boring and even badly sung tonight. Eurovisionality: *
00.21 Time for quick tv-news. Michelle is doing a great job. A real hostess in charge. Why am I a bit surprised?! After that a fake technical problem to create an impromptu movie promotion act... sigh....

00.36 Renzo Rubino – Custodire
His third Sanremo. The two previous have gone very well for him winning various awards and top placings. Now I'm left a bit untouched. Beautiful melody but I don't quite get it. Eurovisionality: ***

00.41 Enzo Avitabile e Peppe Servillo – Il coraggio di ogni giorno
Nice arrrangement filled with the South, you can almost feel the heat of the afternoon and grasshoppers. The melody is nice. Not an easy song, you need the right state of mind, and further listenings. Eurovisionality: ***

00.47 Le Vibrazioni – Così sbagliato
Effective radio pop. Will surely be a succeess outside Sanremo, how far they will go here? We will see. Kinda nice. Eurovisionality: ***
01.01 Time for ads and then maybe.... the results! Partial ones as this is only the demoscopic jury's results. The artists are only grouped in alphabetical order, and yes, there are some major surprises.... But all can still change, this was only 30% of tonight's fina result, and every evening more votes will be added, and apparently neever zeroed.
Tomorrow we continue. Ten Big will re-perform and the Newcomers contest stats. Join me then!

SONGS OF THE YEAR 2015: #5 KRISTA SIEGFRIDS - ON & OFF

Krista Siegfrids is delivering nice pop tunes one after another and this one is particularly catchy and soon you will be singing along..... Hopefully her Melodifestivalen entry will be equally good!

ESC 2016 WISH LIST: MARGARET FOR POLAND

Małgorzata Jamroży aka Margaret has also been tipped for Eurovision and apparently she did turn it down but she'd be perfect. She's got a look and persona you can't unnotice nor forget, she's got hit songs, she has been voted or nominated for everything from Trendy artist to the Hope of the Year, Fashion Icon and Glamour Woman of the year besides the usual best video, song, album, debut..... Oh she's also a fashion designer! She's very clever with social medias and would surely use it to her advantage if selected for Stockholm 2016. Her debut album is titled Add the blonde , do we need to say more? Except it includes mostly Swedish written pop tunes like Tell me how are ya , Wasted , Start a fire and Heartbeat . And of course her debut single and internationally noticed Thank you very much that you can enjoy below with all its anti-textil feel. I think she's Eurovision perfection, she's cheeky and fun, can we have her?

Rumors, rumors, rumors....

While the national selections for Junior Eurovision are going on around Europe and Ani Lorak's been confirmed as host all sort of rumors about the real thing are beginning to be the order of the day. Austria returns - or then not. Andorra stays home - or then not. San Marino returns - well, most likely but not surely. Luxembourg should make a come back - or then maybe not. Liechtenstein is still in the running - or has it ever been for real? Has the local TV ever confirmed anything? Is it just wishful thinking by the fans? Poland on the other hand has confirmed they will be in Oslo. And Italy will be still out. And apparently there will be no ban or such for Azerbaijan nor Spain for the irregularities in and after the 2009 edition. EBU had to change the text in the rules to make it sure nothing like that what happened in Azerbaijan could happen again. Or if it will they have means and rules to back up a ban or sanction.... Katerina Avgoustakis has been rumored to be in Oslo...

ESC 2016 BELARUS: NAKED WITH WOLVES?

Today's funniest Eurovision related story comes from Belarus. Some sources claim Ivan wants to perform on stage naked and with live wolf or wolves. It surely would be a first on Eurovision stage! We have seen some forgotten underwear over the years, and some cardbox animals though..... Is it time to take things a bit further?  No, according the rules live animals are not allowed, and Eurovision being a family show nudity won't do either. (It seems to be ok to be half naked if you are a dancer though..... )

JEDWARD GETS NAKED FOR THE FANS

Well, almost. The boys celebrated their 650.000th follower on Twitter by being photographed fresh from shower as promised. It's not the first time they drop their clothes as you see here . Meanwhile their second album is nearly here and the title track Young love is hitting the charts....

EUROVISION 2026 - SAN MARINO: SENHIT WINS SAN MARINO SONG CONTEST

San Marino. The tiny little thing that makes things big and never ever stops surprising us. This year after the usual very long selecting process that included several previous Eurovision entrants and wannabes from various countries, even with songs they competed in another country's selection, as the last twist of turns announced the qualified semi-finalists before they aired the shows..... Ok. Because why Not?  Read more about all the zillion entrants here After all the submissions, castings through Dreaming San Marino song contest 20 semi-finalists were selected, among them previous Eurovision entrants Magdalena from Poland, Marayya from Slovenia and Star Guy (Norway),  and from this years national final selections Elysa (Estonia), Sheila (Albania) and Xannova Xan (Greece) and even Edward Maya also running in Romania at the same time, with other singers from Italy, Switzerland, Spain, Czechia, Netherlands and United States.  Ten out of those 20 semi-finalist qualified ...

Regina Lund - naked and censored

Regina Lund's new video Jag är osynlig was censored by Youtube only minutes after it had been uploaded. In the video she was playing a female Jesus who gets crusified in the end. "I was shocked!" she says. "There's nothing more naked in it as in every church! It's ok to have naked man hanging on the wall but my nakedness is too much on internet? ". Oh well, no comment. She's prepairing a new album Dare Regina Lund and we of course remember her from her Melodifestivalen 2007 adventure with Rainbow star .

UK: Naked Blue

The boys of Blue have posed nude again. This time for the Attitude magazine's annual Naked issue and they are also in the cover. Watch the video of the shooting here . Band member Duncan, who is bi-sexual, recently told The Daily Star : “We are getting our kit off for Attitude magazine like the McFly boys did. I’m up for showing everything off. I’m happy enough about the size of my manhood. ” Extra media attention won't hurt their changes in Germany to win it for the UK for the first time since 1997... They will and they can!

FRANCE: LINH - J'AVOUE

As I'm off to France for some well deserved holidays and will get back to this blog afterwards I will feature a song a day. From France as my travelling tradition goes. By my favorite French singers bien sur. Enjoy!

EUROVISION 2026 - PORTUGAL: BANDIDOS DO CANTE WINS FESTIVAL DA CANCAO

Portugal's 60th Festival da Canção came to an end tonight and the winner is Bandidos do Cante.  Portugal's national selection for Eurovision song contest 2026 has been quite critical to the participation with most artists and/or songwriters declaring they won't go to Vienna should they win. In the end there are apparently only two artists who have declared they will go to Vienna, and one uncertain if they win. Let's see who eventually will go to Eurovision in the end.... Apparently Bandidos do Cante is one of those who have said yes. Read more here .  Bandidos de Cante was formed almost by accident by childhood friends singing Alentejo folk songs at dinner parties and such. The quintet is composed of Miguel Costa, Duarte Farias, Francisco Raposo, Luís Aleixo and Francisco Pestana, all natives of the municipality of Beja, except for Francisco Pestana, who is from Monte Trigo. After tone of those dinner gatherings they were invited to record vocals to D.A.M.A.'s Casa ...
