Romania's Selecția Națională 2023 is one of the lucky or unlucky ones to have set their date for February 11 being one of the seven finals taking place at the same night and fighting for attention. Twelve songs made it among the 86 submissions, among them Andrada Popa, a Junior Euroviison 2008 veteran, and among songwriters Norwegian Kjetil Mørland (Statues). Otherwise it's apparently rather unknown cast and there will be only 100% televote to avoid the usual drama and chaos that has reigned in recent years. So I hear.
Deiona - Call on me **
Well, this moves by without a trace....
Andrada Popa - No time for me **
Pretty much same goes for this one. By no means not bad, but just rather forgettable and leaves no trace. Better vocals though.
Ocean Drive - Take you home ***
Change of beat. This is kinda groovy and catchy in a way. But just like the previous ones this just flows away without a trace. It seems to be the trend her.....
Amia - Puppet ***
Ok, this is different. I get what they want to be but do they reach it? Maybe. Not exactly my cup of tea but this might be a card to play in Liverpool. Would also fit nicely into Romanian Eurovision entry history that is rather peculiar to say the least. Would this be a hit in the grand final? Maybe a good mid table and then forgotten.
Andrei Duţu - Statues ****
By no means nothing original but this is a good song, nice melody, catchy arrangement and I like his voice. Radio hit written all over this but is it enough? With good vocal performance, the right staging and a bit of luck this could be almost Top-10 material in Liverpool (see Estonia last year) thanks to televote. Who knows? Tbh this drags a bit too long after a promising start.
Theodor Andrei - D.G.T. (Off and on) **
Rockier one. But sadly a very uninspired and boring one in my opinion.
Steven Roho, Gabriella and Formaţia Albatros - Lele ***
Ok, here we go for a bit more ethnic sound that was pretty clear already from the title. Quite pleasant and groovy but.... in the end there isn't that much in the package. Lacks energy big time.
Aledaida - Bla bla bla ***
We continue with ethnic beats with more Latin flavor. Why am I thinking Chanel? Comparison would be evident if chosen is all I know.
Adriana Moraru - Faralaes ****
This sounds like a demo, would need a major re-production but somehow this comes across very lovely, catchy and happy. The Latin vibe is here, also this would fit into Romanian Euroviison history very nicely. I give four stars for the potential and secretly hope this wins so they have to revamp this and make this something boombastic!
Maryliss - Hai vino ***
After those Latin bangers we slow down for some acoustic indie pop. All I can think is Got wine? I kinda like this and at the same time I feel somehow I shouldn't....
JaxMan - Bad & Cool ****
I kinda love this. He sings sweet and friendly that he wants to be bad & cool and I believe it all. This is catchy, nicely familiar and sucks out of Avicii pool but not too much.Should this win this could become a Tiktok meme and do a lot better than we think now. Maybe.
Andreea D Folcior Orchestra - Periniţa mea *
Just no. No.Propably this wins and makes wonders in the televote like Moldova last year but... No.
