EUROVISION 2023: ITALY - SANREMO 2023 PRIMA SERATA / FIRST NIGHT

73rd Sanremo festival will kick of tonight at Teatro Ariston in Saremo. The formula is pretty much the same as previous years when Amadeus has been in charge, his year number 4 out of 5 confirmed - just more young artists and more songs making the super final come Saturday night!
Tonight, the first night Amadeus will be hosting with  Eurovision veteran Gianni Morandi and influencer Chiara Ferragni, Mahmood and Blanco will be on stage singing their winning entry and Euroviison 6th placed Brividi, and Blanco will present his new single L'isola delle rose as well. I Pooh will perform as well, including Eurovision veteran Riccardo Fogli who has in it from 1966 to 1974 when he went solo (and won Sanremo 1982 and did Eurovision 1983), Pooh won Sanremo in 1990 and continued until 2016, and on and off ever since. They have sold over 100 million records so they are Big.
Besides action in Teatro Ariston we will have Salmo performing from a cruise ship anchored outside the city, and Piero Pelú and Gemelli di Guidonia from a stage outside nearby the theater.
This is Rai production so Elena Sofia Ricci will be there promoting a new fiction, Fiori sopra l'inferno as well.
The first 14 entries will be presented and the voting is by media aka accredited journalists on spot in Sanremo: newspapers, web, radio. In the end of the night a  ranking will be revealed.

 ----

The night started with a moment of silence for the victims of Turkey earthquake, followed by the entrance of President Mattarella (a first for a president of the republic) followed by national anthem sung by Morandi and audience. Then enters Roberto Benigni to talk and talk and read the Italian constitution, as it is its 75th birthday. Expect some 15 minutes or so..... Then we should get right to the first song. Maybe,

AO returns and gives us a song that's better than I expected and gives us quite a vocal acrobatics, even if her voice isn't apparently anymore like it used to be. She's known for her looks and fashion statements but now she was in simple black dress and her blond hair quite wild.
gIANMARIA - Mostro **
He's about 2m, white open shirt and black pamts. The winner of Sanremo giovani, made famous in XFactor. I'm not fan of this kind of singing and shouting, nor I like this song a lot. Maybe I'm just old.

Chiara Ferragni makes her first appearance in black and white. So far everything has been black and white except Morandi in dark purple.
Mr.Rain - Supereroi ***
Another tall debutant. I have liked a few of his songs in the past, let's see how this one is.... He's in black, sparkly suit playing paino at first, the enter a child choir .Italy has the rule that kids can't do television after midnight so Mr Rain has secured an early spot every night. Should he make the Top-5 he can't perform... The performance is nervous and he seems a bit lost, but the song's quite nice. Quite sweet and likable.

Enters Mahmood and Blanco to perform Brividi, last year's winner, the most streamed song in Italy (6xplatinum) in 2022 and 6th placed at home soil in Turin 2022 Eurovision.
Black and silvery white for them as well. Where are all the colors?!Another excellent performance by them on this stage, better than Turin for sure.

Marco Mengoni - Due vite *****
Mengoni of 68 platinum discs since his win in 2013 he's back! In .... black leather! Golden chains. Full Village People somehow. Fantastic ballad in true Mengoni style, performed to perfection. Love it.
Ariete - Mare di guai ***
After a megastar another debutante. Black and white and RED jacket! Finally some color. She has lost also her trademark beanie for Sanremo. Quite nice song that could grow during these nights but for now remains somewhere in between, maybe thanks to her live performance that maybe isn't the strongest.
Ultimo - Alba ***
I wonder if Ultimo met Mahmood or did they just ignore each other the best they could? Anyways, with Mengoni and Giorgia he's on paper the biggest name this year. And yes, he's in black. The song is like all his songs but it's not a bad one. This will go far. Even if the song doesn't really go anywhere. Shouty.

After that we move outside to the outdoor stage where Piero Pelú belts out his Sanremo 2020 entry Gigante. Because why not? But all we remember him going off stage and stealing one lady's purse during his performance ....

Coma_Cose - L'Addio ****
Sparkly golden dress for her with yellow hair, black and green for him. Applause already for the outfits! They even have sort of choreography going on and on top of that a perfect low tempo pop song.

And it's time for I Pooh including Riccardo Fogli. It's a boyband of age 72-79. Well, Gianni Morandi is 78! They are doing a medley of their hits from 1966 to 2016. And then of course Uomini soli, Sanremo 1990 winner. On screen  a late band member Stefano D'Orazio (1948-2020)

This is agood moment to say the stage looks great and it works, moves and does a lot of things. Shame the Turin 2022 experience wasn't working as planned, it's just not fair.

Elodie - Due ****
Elodie's third time, maybe it's the lucky time? And yes, she's in black, looking like an emu. With a surprise! A perfect pop song with echoes of her last entry but more r'n'b and pop. I suppose Euroboys will go wild for this and for a reason.

Chiara Ferragni enters the stage..... nude? Not quite.

Blanco returns and due problems with in-ear loses his control and instead of rolling in roses as planned decides to destroy all set. Puritans didn't like it. Nor audience in the theater booing and whistling. His career has been fast fading, as fast his star started to shine. Too much too soon maybe? Audience didn't buy his excuses.

Leo Gassmann - Terzo cuore ***
Sanremo Giovani winner of couple of years ago finally gets to compete among Big.Dressed in ...yes, black and white he sings straight to the camera his midtempo pop song that is quite nice actually. He seems to be enjoying himself on stage a lot and not nervous at all. That might just turn into votes later tonight.

Cugini di Campagna - Lettera 22 **
All sparkly silver and high platform shoes. The song's at all what I think this band is, where's the falsetto and 70's sound? This is today's pop and if performed by someone else without this visual fireworks would certainly work better. Now one just can't quite take it seriously-
Gianluca Grignani - Quando ti manca il fiato ***
Again black with silvery sparkle in the jacket. He has become a bit meme of himself. Beautiful song, touching lyrics but maybe this works better in studio version? Then again it keeps growing and growing until the end. Old school Sanremo with almost 4,5 minutes while the youngester can't even fill up 2.45...
Olly - Polvere ***
Finally color! Pink jacket over white and black. And yes, the autotune is an artistic choice, not because he can't sing. His words, not mine. A lot happens in the song, with beautiful strings. Uptempo pop.
CollaZio - Non mi va ****
Oh, more autotune and more color! All pastels, some rap, some pop. groovy funky arrangement. I didn't quite expect anything from them but this is actually very nice. Despite some bad vocals here and there. I need to listen the studio version asap!
Mara Sattei - Duemilaminuti **
Måneskin's Damiano is among the songwriters for this one. First hearing didn't give me much sadly. Not bad. Not good.

In the end the ranking for the first night - as it should be:

ESC 2016 WISH LIST: MARGARET FOR POLAND

Małgorzata Jamroży aka Margaret has also been tipped for Eurovision and apparently she did turn it down but she'd be perfect. She's got a look and persona you can't unnotice nor forget, she's got hit songs, she has been voted or nominated for everything from Trendy artist to the Hope of the Year, Fashion Icon and Glamour Woman of the year besides the usual best video, song, album, debut..... Oh she's also a fashion designer! She's very clever with social medias and would surely use it to her advantage if selected for Stockholm 2016. Her debut album is titled Add the blonde , do we need to say more? Except it includes mostly Swedish written pop tunes like Tell me how are ya , Wasted , Start a fire and Heartbeat . And of course her debut single and internationally noticed Thank you very much that you can enjoy below with all its anti-textil feel. I think she's Eurovision perfection, she's cheeky and fun, can we have her?

SONGS OF THE YEAR 2015: #5 KRISTA SIEGFRIDS - ON & OFF

Krista Siegfrids is delivering nice pop tunes one after another and this one is particularly catchy and soon you will be singing along..... Hopefully her Melodifestivalen entry will be equally good!

ESC 2016 BELARUS: NAKED WITH WOLVES?

Today's funniest Eurovision related story comes from Belarus. Some sources claim Ivan wants to perform on stage naked and with live wolf or wolves. It surely would be a first on Eurovision stage! We have seen some forgotten underwear over the years, and some cardbox animals though..... Is it time to take things a bit further?  No, according the rules live animals are not allowed, and Eurovision being a family show nudity won't do either. (It seems to be ok to be half naked if you are a dancer though..... )

GOODBYE, FAREWELL...

The time has come. After all these years, 5,7 million visits, 12.000 articles I guess the time has come. As much as I love and care for Eurovision it just doesn't feel the same. The Corona years took their toll and the past two years and certain decisions have helped me to mature the idea that next year I will hear the songs for the first time in semi-final just like any so called local.  The bubble has burst. Add the toxicity in social medias and fandom. The arrogant teenagers who saw their first contest somewhere 2017 or even 2021 who think they know it all and only their opinion matters. Did I mention the toxic atmosphere on social medias? I'm too old for that sh*t. It's been a long ride that took me to various Eurovision on spot as a fan and tourist,  as a journalist, as a delegation member. I met some great people, made memories of lifetime. In stressful, sad periods of my life this blog has been my safe place, a place to escape and forget everything else for an hour o

NO AMOR IN ICELAND FOR ÁSDIS MARIA

In Iceland Söngvakeppni Sjónvarpsins 2014 started as well. Five songs in the running and two were voted to the final: Gréta Mjöll - Eftir eitt lag and Gissur Páll Gissurarson - Von . To be honest I'm not very suprised about the choices even if I was hoping for Ásdís María Viðarsdóttir - Amor to make it. The people of Björk didn't warm up to that enough, sadly. Also Sverrir Bergmann - Dönsum burtu blús and Vignir Snær Vigfússon - Elsku þú are out but that's ok. Or maybe I would have sent Ásdis Maria with Vignir to the final....Oh well. Next week another five songs and two qualifiers.

BLOGILKAR EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW: HANNAH MANCINI

Straight into interview with my Bycycling reporter Robert goes American born Slovenian represent Hannah Mancini. The chatty lady tells us how she ended up from LA to Slovenia and how it is. She does also some serious name dropping. Talks about Slovenian music business. And has her husband turned into an Eurovision maniac?! And how Slovenian does she feel actually? And who would she like to grace the Eurovision stage for Slovenia again? Read it all here: Thank you Hannah for this interview. You're an American woman singing for Slovenia. How on earth did you end up there? I married a Slovenian man! Actually he lived in the States when I met him. I always loved the idea of living in Europe and it was kinda perfect as I met an European man! And he always wanted to come to Europe, his parents emigrated when he was a small child so eventually when the opportunity came, he had a good business thing happening there and also I had some music contacts in Amsterdam and in the UK an

CAROLA'S BOOBS STEAL THE SHOW, SVT APOLOGIES

Update! Another thing got Swedes talking last night: Carola's boobs when she was giving away an award. This is not the first time her boombs cause headlines; her misfortunate adventures in the 80's in Japan wer explained with her boobs being too big for Japanese market. Ok.... Or was it the song ? Anyways, Carola apologies and says she thinks the dress is stylish and elegant (even her friends said so) and she's a mature woman in her 40s, not a 16-year-old girl and looks like one. The Swedish Oscars, Guldbagge awards were given out last night. Carola was there as a guest star to sing Barbra Streisand's The way we were when honoring the movie stars who passed away during 2012. However, the cameras were too much on Carola, not on the stars showed in photos in the background and that upset many viewers as that part of the show was to celebrate them, not Carola. Oh well...  The producer of the show tells in Aftonbladet the part of the show was made the sam

FINLAND: CONGRATS HANNA PAKARINEN - BABY IS COMING!

No more leave me alones as Eurovision 2007 veteran Hanna Pakarinen has published in her Youtube channel a video unboxing the Finnish state's maternity box aka layette set thus announcing she's due to have a baby later this spring. Congratulations!

Summer songs: Kylie Minogue - On a night like this

This is one of the songs that make me think of sweaty summer nights, humid air and being slightly drunk... I wonder where that all comes from? Anyways. Kylie Minogue recorded On a night like this, maybe not first but better than Pandora or Anna Vissi . And Lord which is actually great!

SWEDEN: LOREEN GETS NUDE WITH BODY

Loreen. A legend for some. A one hit wonder for most. Since winning Eurovision song contest 2012 with Euphoria she has released seven singles. None of them has left the mark really. Her third attempt in Melodifestivalen this year with Statements ended up in a real defeat.  Now she's ready to finally release her second album Nude in August. The lead single is Body . It's... well, like her previous stuff. Okeyish to listen to when it's on but completely forgettable once it's finished.... Pretendious comes to mind. But then maybe I just don't get her. Maybe I never did. Her fans are surely euphoric. Maybe.  Listen in Spotify
