Have you wondered who the pianist is in Mikael Saari's fantastic We should be trough, one of the entries in tonight's first heat of UMK 2013? It's Tuomas Vertanen, from Espoo. He's a singer-pianist himself, and studies in Sibelius Akademia to become a music teacher. He has also done the much praised piano arrangement. As we know the song is written by Mikael himself, but the final result is a collaboration between Mikael, Tuomas and Kai Poutanen. Tuomas and Kai had been already working together before Mikael came along and it was Mikael's idea to send it to UMK. "We have worked a lot for this song" Tuomas says in Länsiväylä, "and it was fantastic to hear we have made it to top-12. We knew already in October we are in top-40 out of 470 demos. It would be great if a guy from Espoo would be on stage in Malmö 2013 in front of 100 million people. The competition is tough though, there are so many kinds of music from rock to soul and jazz. I can't say how it ends" he admits.
UMK first heat tonight 20 CET also online in YLE Areena.
