Eurovision throwback! New series. I will present and comment here the contests of yesteryears picking up four songs from each year (or more). Not the ones I think are the best (now) but the songs that throwback memories when I see them in the participation list. Of course mostly they're my favorites at the time, songs that I have loved. Some have aged well, some... well, not so well.
Anyways, let's start from the beginning: 1976.
1976 is the first contest I have some memories of. Nine years old me watched the snow sneaking in to living room escaping the eyes of my parents who'd rather see me in bed already. But I was there, hidden at the door eyes fixed to the tv screen and by 1977 I was hooked forever. My uncle had the tape of these songs so I listened to it every given chance when at my granny's in the summer.....
The voting was a runaway race between winners Brotherhood of Man and France's Catherine Ferry leading the first half of the voting. She used those addictive handclaps long before Mahmood, Norway came last, Finland midtable with Pump pump, that deserved so much more, and my liking for the French and more exotic languages was evident already back then.
The four songs I have chosen were the ones I used to sing-a-long as kid, except Judy et Cie that I have learned to appreciate later and today is one of my all time favorites. 1,2,3 was an uptempo banger with the handclaps while Toi, la musique et moi was great arrangement then and still is. Emor shalom was such a fun with those ay ay ays and boh bohs. I may have done the choreography a few times back in the day.... Special mention to The party's over now, so fitting to this year's Eurovision in the Netherlands again. And Greece almost made it to my featured quartet. Let's not forget Yogoslavia, an entry that has over the years emerged as a favorite, back then not so much.
Ralph Siegel was there, so were Al Bano & Romina Power as well as Peter, Sue & Marc... and that fashion sense! Those hairdos! And how nicely Sanremoesque with those flowers to the ladies post-performance!
