It's time to kick of the usual reviews. The opinions are all mine and if I don't like some song it's simply just not my cup of tea so to speak. If I like something you dislike or hate, it's fine, too. No stresso, no need to be depresso it's just music and tastes that re diverse and therefor beautiful! I also try to predict their success come May a little bit but as we know once the staging is out everything may change, remember Fuego and Rise like a phoenix for example?
For this series I have grouped the songs in fours as usual as the songs may have similarities or something in common. Some fours came out beautifully, the others.... well not so well. Here comes the last part!
ESTONIA - Tommy Cash - Espresso macchiato
Tommy's Eurovision adventure started thanks to Käärijä with whom he dueted in It's crazy it's party. They also share the same song writer and producer Johannes Naukkarinen. In Eesti laul he scored convincing full points in the first round with both jury and televotes and in the superfinal he scored 83% of the votes.
The original video was an homage to Andy Warhol and while the song didn't take the Europe by storm (yet) it is now quickly gaining streams and hitting big in Italy where majority of people like it but those very few that are offended by the lyrics get their 5 minutes of fame by criticizing it.
He is certainly a controversial artist, or rather ARTIST, and winning Eurovision is next in his agenda as a performance art. Interesting stuff for sure but am I a big fan of his? maybe not really. But here we are talking songs and this song is absolutely great. I have been listening to it ever since it was released, sing it to myself and others in every given chance, the lines have become every day phrases we use at work for fun any given occasion and apparently have so many others judging the amount of memes, Tiktoks and other social media interactions. The only one managing that is Bara bada bastu.
He may not be the greatest singer live but the it didn't stop Käärijä nor Baby Lasagna reaching 2nd place. This also recalls a lot Little Big who sadly missed Eurovision 2020 - and on the other hand thinking now phew to that! - and the fandom always forget the masses voting hear the songs for the first time in the semis or even in the final so the first impact it what matters the most. They don't know Tommy and his controversies. They hear a catchy tune with original staging and hum along before the end of it and vote for it.
And talking about the staging. We have seen the act with the bodyguards so far but the grannies from Ostuni in Puglia (and one of my favorite places on earth btw, had one of the best holidays ever there. And the nicest, kindest people ever!), southern Italy against all odds are apparently involved in the end. I thought it was just a joke but the latest news seem to confirm five of them have been selected and will fly to Basel.... but then again I believe it when I see it!
To end this series of reviews: This is my winner by far!
Off to have a espresso now. Macchiato of course, my favorite.
