Latvia's Supernova 2022 started with 16 chosen songs, and one more was added from ten additional songs based on online vote. We lost Eurovision veteran Katrina Dimanta in that round. Ten songs qualified for the final from semi-final with jury/televote 50-50 voting and this round we lost Markus Riva, who never stops trying. Eurovision veterans Aminata and Intars Busulis (in BUJĀNS) made it.
Half the songs seem to be joke entries, most of them horrid but two of them actually rise above the horrible being actually rather good. But in general the standard is very low..... The worst of all Baltics this year. Aminata is the designed winner but I kinda hope it's either Bad or He, she, you & me, or even better Es pabiju tur, simply because it's in Latvian.
Citi Zēni - Eat your salad *
Ok, the opening lyrics got your attention for sure. And there's nothing else for me to get my attention. Groovy energetic performance of a song heard a million times in some adverts and shows and filler music.
Linda Rušeniece - Pay my own bills *
Thanks for the effort but I don't think I found nothing interesting or original in this.
Elina Gluzunova - Es pabiju tur ***
Nice to hear something in Latvian for a change! This said quite timeless ballad, sung without gimmicks. And that's refreshing! Nice arrangement.
Raum - Plans *
Oh dear.... I just wasted three minutes of my life. Is this some high school's end performance? Ok, maybe it's not that bad. It's just so plain.
Mēs Jūs Mīlam - Rich itch *
Latvia really is full of joke entries this year. This isn't even funny. Period. I don't care to see or hear this ever again.
Miks Galvanovskis - I'm just a sinner *
He got the wildcard from the on-line vote not being part of the original line up. And he does stand out. But me he could have stayed there. Pretentious posing, forced vocals, comes across very fake. You aren't that rock, are you? Quite annoying in every sense.
Aminata - I'm letting you go ***
Aminata has been the savior of Latvia's Eurovision fate for way too long now. And even here she stands a bit above the others, even with performing from home with Covid-19. This said this song isn't such a stand out as the songs she has written before. Good solid song but nothing more. Things might change when she gets on stage and ads the visuals.
Bermudu Divstūris - Bad ****
Is this the return of Rafal? Without the horrible lyrics this is very enjoyable take on 80's disco pop and it's refreshing it's guys doing the choreography and not semi naked ladies, is that a new trend? Lyrics alone earn this a humor act label while maybe it isn't? Best bit is the vocals, love that Musiqq voice!
Bujāns - He, she, you & me ***
Full blown 80's aesthetics and beat, those shoulders, hair, pants.... I usually dislike these humor numbers but this is quite nice actually. There I said it. And they truly perform with all their might!
Inspo - A happy place **
Pretty nice, laid back acoustic number when you listen to it but what do you remember afterwards? Hmmm.... Not much. You just want to fly away to a happy place that is not Supernova 2022.
