Malta has something else to offer this year: Vodka! Malta has quite a different Eurovision history. They took part already in 1971 and 1972, coming last on both occasion singing in maltese. They returned in 1975 in english but still came only 12th and left the contest. In the 1980's they are rumoured to have shown some interest but as the maximum limit of countries back then was set to 22 they didn't fit in until 1991 and scored 6th place right away. The year after they were 3rd. A very good trend followed with high places with a very few exceptions (15th in 1999 and 25th in 2003). After a 2nd place in 2005 they went to another extreme and came last in 2006 and lost the plot when also 2007 they failed to make the final coming 25th in semifinal.... This year... well... we will see! Morena (23) from the island of Gozo is described as Mediterranean vulcano and she surely won't pass by unnoticed. Pretty with impressive dark voice she's like a hurricane all over the stage and therefor just a logical follow up to last year's vertiginous Maltese entry. That little island is dying to win Eurovision and has set to make Europe dizzy with their entries so Europe would vote them to victory out of mercy.... Once again the share on those islands will be around 99% when Morena and her dancers will be on stage in Belgrade.... Morena took part in Maltasong already in 2006 in duet with Paul Giordimaina with Time and reached 9th place. But the seed was planted and Morena was hungry for a revenge. It came this year when she got two songs into the final: Vodka and Casanova, both written by Borg-Vella. She won and the song's one of the loudest and most hysterical ones to take the Eurovision stage ever. Will people take a vodka and sing along or get themselves drunk to survive after remains to be seen....The song has been written by Gerard James Borg with Philip Vella. This is their 5th Maltese win in 8 years! So far they have had mixed fortunes: Last year's Vertigo failed miserably and was only 25th in the semifinal while 7th Wonder nearly won in 2002 being close runner up. Desire in 2000 was 8th and On again... off again 12th in 2004. Besides these winning songs Gerard has been involved in 14 other Maltese final songs between 1999-2008 with Philip and with or without him in 6 other countries national finals: Belgium, Bulgaria, Iceland, the Netherlands and Norway. Do titles like Beyond you, Décadance, I wanna manicure, Heatwave, Velvet blue and Absolutely fabulous ring a bell? Romania last year but the song Lovestruck by Indiggo was disqualifed at the last moment.
