Nouveau Théatre in Luxembourg hosted the 18th Eurovision in April 7, 1973. Austria and Malta skipped a year so there were 17 countries when Israel joined and caused some controversy (and I guess that still goes on, unfortunately). It is rumoured Ilanit had bullet proof vest under her dress and the audience was adviced to sit down while Israel was performing or they might be shot! Sweden caused scandal with it's questionable lyrics... the band Malta had changed their name to The Nova for Eurovision and had beaten ABBA (with Ring ring) in the Swedish final. In 1973 there was the freedom of language and so many sung in English, including Finland and Sweden. Marion Rung from Finland opened just like she had done in 1962, also in Luxembourg, but didn't finish 7th but 6th - the best Finnish placement until Lordi came in 2006. How sad is that? Ireland had its own drama and even flew in another singer, Tina Reynolds, to step in but in the end Maxi did sing her entry but finished only 10th. Cliff Richard was at it again but was beaten by both Anne-Marie David who took another win for Luxembourg in a row and Spain's Mocedades who scored a worldwide hit with Eres tu. The top-3 was within 6 points...
