Hilversum hosted the third Eurovision song contest March 12, 1958. Domenico Modugno opened the contest with
Nel blu dipinto di blu, better known as
Volare. It came only 3rd but remains still today the best known, most covered and recorded Eurovision song ever. It made #1 in the US and was a top-10 hit in UK. In Italy it stayed at #1 for 16 weeks. He got to sing the song twice though, as for technical problems it was not seen in some countries. Corry Brokken became the only Eurovision winner (so far...) to have scored a last place, too. Lys Assia on the other hand almost became the first double winner but in the end France's André Claveau beat her 27-24. He died at 88 in 2003.
