It's the time of the year this blogger starts waiting and wishing for Portugal. Portugal has been participating since 1964 and still without a win, best placing being 6th and a couple of 7th places to ad. Sounds very much like Finland before Lordi came along, and like Finland in mid-80's also Portugal had a string of rather good placements in early 90's giving a hint that things might change but no. Sometimes the songs were really not worth a good placing and sometimes they were and just like didn't score, like Rita Guerra's 22nd place in 2003 with Deixa-me sonhar that one can call scandalous. The country has a rich music heritage from fado to Braziliand and African rhythms, a card they haven't yet played. Maybe it's the time? I need an excuse to go back to Lisbon and Eurovision would be just a good one! :-)
Here are some Portuguese goodies worth remembering: Um grande, grande amor, Play back, Bem bom, Silencio e tanta gente, Conquistador, Lusitana paixao, Amor d'agua fresca, Chamar a musica, Danca comigo, Senhora do mar, Ha dias assim....
It's worth mentioning some Portuguese artists have moved to greater things in world music after Eurovision like Dulce Pontes and Sara Tavares. The interest in high this year as well with over 400 applicants. This and next week RTP is having auditions in Lisbon and Porto and then the 12 finalists will be announced. RTP will then invite composers to write them songs and the already recording artists do not need to go through the auditions. So it looks like a joke entry like in 2011 is very unlikely this time around. The 46th Portuguese Eurovision entry will be chosen on March 10, 2012. Good luck Portugal, this blogger wants you to win!
