ORF and EBU have decided: the 70th Eurovision song contest will be held in Vienna for the third time and the contest returns to Wiener Stadthalle. The final takes place on May 16 after the semi-finals on May 12 and 14. Yesterday Ebu also launched the new logo and fonts for the Eurovision song contest brand and one can say mildly that it wasn't well received.....
After Austria's win in Basel with JJ's Wasted love the excitement in Austria was high and as usual most every town wanted the hosting job for 2026 until the reality kicked in and in the end there were only Vienna and Innsbruck with valid submissions.
Lack of suitable venues, airports or money made cities and towns drop their intentions before even submitting a proposal from Klagenfurt to Salzburg, from Ebreichsdorf to Graz, Oberwart, Sankt Pölten and Weis & Linz.
Innsbruck run with Olympiahalle, used for Winter Olympics 1964 and 1976 for ice-hockey and figure skating as well as 2012 Youth Olympic games. Add ice-hockey world championships 2005. It has hosted also European championships in handball and volleyball It was opened in 1963 and renovated in 2001 and 204 with a capacity of 8.000 seated and up to 4.000 in the field. Major concerts have been by the Rolling Stones, Tina Turner, Cher, Dire Straits, Iron Maiden, Gianna Nannini, Nena and Falco.
Vienna bid with Wiener Stadthalle, already host of Eurovision song contest 2015. Originally constructed between 1953.1958 and expandd in 1974, 1994 and 2006 it has a capacity of over 16.000 in its main hall with a couple of additional halls with over 1400 and 2000 capacity among others. It has hostd the ice hockey world championships almost every ten yesrs: 1967, 1977, 1987, 1996 and 2005. Add several European championships in various sports from athletes to swimming, handball, volleyball and badminton. Major concerts held here are by the Rolling Stones, Beach Boys, Bee Gees, Queen, ABBA, Elton John, Prince, George Michael, Whitney Houston, Janet Jackson, and most every hard rock band and pop star on world tour.
