Yle has announced the rules for Umk 2023 aka the Finnish national selection for the Eurovision song contest 2023 to be held somewhere in the United Kingdom on behalf of Ukraine. While doing so they also promise that Umk 2023 will be bigger than ever!
The submission period is from September 1 to 5. One artist is allowed up to three submissions (but only one of them can qualify). If chosen the final versions must be ready by November 3. The final will take place in February 2023.
The songs can't be sent to any other country's selections and at least one writer must be a Finn, as well as the main soloist, or at least have a permanent residence in Finland. Rest of the rules are the common Eurovision rules set by Ebu.
They also launched a sort of Who do you want to take part? commenting on their Instagram and here is the short list of those names mentioned most often (or just mentioned and who this blogger agrees with ;-) As we've had two rock acts in a row I hope for a more pop oriented approach this time! Yet I think we won't sadly see any of these in the line up ....
Erika Vikman, the 2020 runner up with Cicciolina.
Vesala, who hosted the Umk 2022 and also performed during the interval.
Ellinoora, multiaward winning hit maker already for a few years
Ida Paul & Kalle Lindroth, they have a steady fan base yet searching for the major hit
Nelli Matula, continues to release singles gaining fame but yet missing The Hit
Diandra, has been at Eurovision wish list forever, a regular songbird on Yle's music shows
BEHM, most awarded, most selling female artist during this pandemic
Robin Packalen, teenage star had it all in Finland, tried the international adult career, didn't go anywhere when the pandemic hit, maybe it's worth playing ESC card?
Antti Tuisku, like Diandra on wishlists since forever.
Viivi, new and fresh talent with several radio hits
Sanni, has been delivering hits for years already, maybe a bit of a decline, could Umk reboot her career?
Joalin, pretty unknown at home, huge in Suth America apparently, one minor hit under her belt
ABREU, around for over a decade, enjoying success again like at start with a string of hits
Benjamin Peltonen, IG star turned into singer with following in Spain back in the day but sings in Finnish
Elias Kaskinen, a stage animal as proven on tv. Could handle ESC nicely.
Fun fact: Elias and Nelli are a couple. Maybe a cheesy Eurovision duet?
