Hours after Måneskin won Eurovision 2021 in Rotterdam and well before they went to dominate the global streaming charts (and not only) starting to collect gold discs from all over several cities stepped ahead in line to announce they are able and willing to host Eurovision 2022 in Italy. Or in most cases willing but not able. Check out EBU's requirements here
Italy being the football nation (and soon European champions again, this blogger hopes) it does have countless arenas but for football, not indoor arenas suitable for Eurovision that can be counted by the fingers of one hand really....
That didn't stop a total of 12 cities shout out their willingness but I suppose once they actually take two minutes to read the requirements to drop out from this official bid and we can say grazie, ma no grazie already at this stage to Bari, Firenze, Napoli, Pesaro, San Remo, Reggio Emilia, Rimini and Verona.
We are left with Torino, Milano, Roma and Bologna. Bologna may be in trouble at this stage with the number of hotel rooms and Roma just doesn't feel right plus the venue has its shape problems.
This lefts us with the original favorite (since 2017) Torino or Turin if you please and Milano aka Milan with its two possible venues. I still stand with Torino. The city itself oozes Italian elegance and would pinpoint the city on world map being a bit forgotten treasure in the Italian touristic map. And apparently it's vacant for the period requested so no events should be rescheduled or cancelled. If not, Palazzo delle scintille in Milano would be a classy location and arena (after some renovation) instead of extremely ugly outside Mediolanum Forum.
UPDATE: By Sunday morning only the official bids are known and public from Torino and Pesaro, that joined with Rimini airport and hotel rooms seems to just fulfill the requirements....
UPDATE 2: On Monday comes the official bid from Bologna with Unipol Arena in Casalecchio di Reno.
UPDATE 3: Out of the blue comes the bid from Jesolo near Venice. All good but the venue as we know it isn't fitting the requirements. Do they know something we don't. And one hour before deadline still no sight of any Milanese bids, nor Rome!
UPDATE 4: The day after we discover a total of 17 (!!!) bids from the expected ones but also quite a few surprises, Jesolo's not being so weird anymore!
Acireale, Alessandria, Bertinoro with Forli and Cesena, Bologna, Florence, Genoa, Jesolo, Matera, Milan, Palazzolo Acreide, Pesaro, Rimini, Rome, Sanremo, Trieste,Turin, Viterbo so indeed the whole of Italy from west to east, from north to Sicily is represented in these very imaginative efforts. Being Italy, is anyone surprised?
Indeed it's not even quite clear where the contest would be held in Alessandria, Matera, Trieste, Viterbo and Palazzolo Acreide.
The bidding cities have until August 4 to submit full details of their plans to Rai and EBU and the decision is expected by the end of August.
