Estonia is one of those few countries having a national final as usual for the Eurovision song contest 2021. If The Roop got a wildcard directly to the final in Lithuania here last year's winner Uku Suviste got one for the semi-finals and qualified, where as in Finland and Sweden last year's winner made it to semis or final (apparently) through open call. But Uku is not alone, the final line up has three more previous winners: Ivo Linna (1996), Koit Toome (1998, 2017) and Jüri Pootsmann (2016). Add Eurovision winner 2001 Dave Benton's daughter Sissi and you have a good dose of Eurovision royalty in da house.
Sadly, there isn't any stand out entries this year so my votes go to Uku and Koit, and most of all Hans, even if I think he may have no chance whatsover...
Egert Milder - Free again **
Rather anonymous, forgettable and uninspiring. Can't remember a thing. Was it country music or something?
Suured tüdrukud - Heaven's not that far tonight ****
Housewifes let loose in the karaoke. Good old schlager, quite irresistible, catchy, fun. Most importantly they seem to enjoy themselves and that's all that matters!
Hans Nayna - One by one *****
I really like his husky voice. The song is simple pop song, heard before, not very original but it works. At least for me. This is a song that will end up in my playlists and I will listen to from now on even when it's forgotten by the fandom. The performance and staging doesn't do it any favors though.
Ivo Linna, Robert Linna, Supernova - Ma olen siin **
Passing the torch to a new generation? Pleasant but that's all....
Karl Killing - Kiss me ***
Cute little number that all depends on the performance and the atmosphere he manages to create. This kinda falls apart when the beat hits. Maybe keep it only acoustic guitar?
Uku Suviste - The lucky one ****
Uku continues the trend of last year's artists coming back with something better so far. Still a bit over produced and pretentious though. He means business and I wouldn't mind him taking the trophy again.
Sissi - Time **
An anthem with a lot of gospel and all that. Very old fashioned sounding, I'm not sure if in a right way? Wait, are the Estonian Housewives backing her?
Jüri Pootsmann - Magus melanhoolia *
More effort and creativity in the staging and in camera work than in the song. Nice to watch but would I listen to this, add this to my playlists? No. Oh, it's very short, too....
Redel - Tartu *
Ok, this is what we know Eesti laul for, Estonian crazy. But no. No. Thankfully also very short!
Koit Toome - We could have been beautiful *****
This is more Koit 1998 rather than 2017. He better get those vocals right though for the final and he might get his third win, and a deserved one. If not, a very good effort. Classic beautiful Eurovision ballad.
Andrei Zevakin & Pluuto - Wingman **
Is this humour rap? Yawn. Also clearly under 3 minutes... Hmm... Is it really so the young folks can't hold an attention for more than a minute or so and even 3 minutes is already an effort these days?!
Katri Voorand - Energy *
Not really going anywhere and those vocal acrobatics don't help to keep it going but tear it apart.
