BlogIlkar Guest Review vol. 2

This blog's favourite multi-European fan Peter is up again with a review. This time about the Euroviisut 2010 songs. It's nice to see how we disagree and agree in perfect harmony! :-) You can also read Rafael De Alba's review here.

Well here we are again, another year when Finland is full of motivation to get another taste of Eurovision victory. Over the last few years there have been very inventive ways of picking a song that will appeal to a broad cross-section of Europeans. Finlands format is quite interesting and should produce a worthy winner for Finns, but will it be a song/singer combination that will appeal to Europe? Who knows? just another 5 months will tell. The following are my comments on the songs that have been chosen as this years finalists. While some of my comments may seem harsh, I do respect these people a lot for entering and being chosen for the finals, and wish them all the best of luck .... but only one can go to Oslo !

Amadeus - Anastacia
• Nice up beat opening, good beat, the attempt at being a greek entry doesn't really work !! Sounds like a mix between a Greek tragedy and a Chinese propaganda anthem - suffers from an incessently recurring theme which isn't much worth writing about - a forgetful melody - not a eurovision hopeful. (but still a good beat) 3
Nina Lassander - Cider Hill
• Beverly Hills 90201 here we come - oh no - it's a just a sweet melody. Nice touch with the zitar. Pleasant balad, but no real climax, a weak chorus. still a nicely constructed song - not a totally successful modulation (key change) - not the worst song, could get through to the final, maybe even has a chance of going to Oslo! 4,5
Bääbs - You Don't Know Tomorrow
• Dramatic opening, if a bit sparse. Original melody, good contrast of motifs, simple accompaniament which gives a solid foundation to the song. Some weakness at the 2 minute mark. The modulation is clear, but too repetitive. Should get to the final, probably won't go to Oslo. 4,5
Boys Of The Band (BOB) - America (I Think I Love You)
• Boys bands haven't had the greatest successes in Europe - remember D'Nash a few years ago ? The rock style will probably appeal to the Finns, but probably won't appeal across Europe - and the sending a song which proclaims love for America may not gain a lot of votes. Again this may make the final, possibly even Oslo, but not a Eurovision winner - it would be a risky choice !! 3,5
Pentti Hietanen - Il mondo è quì
• Flashback to the 80s, and why not have some Italian - a nice language choice, nice song, very traditional - don't expect this to get to the final, but would be a hit in a normal concert hall. 3,5
Monday - Play
• Good opening, gets straight into the melody. This will appeal to a wide range of listeners going by recent Finnish history. It's a strong song, I would expect it to get to the final and has a chance to go to Oslo. 4
Antti Kleemola - Sun puolella
• Nice song, sung with feeling (even a non-Finn can detect some emotion) - nicely sung, nice strong chorus, nice melody - I like it - good enough to be in the final - has a chance for Oslo, but I'm not sure. 4
Heli Kajo - Annankadun kulmassa
• "Tiri tiri tomba" type song (look it up in google) - a fresh approach to the style - playful, and pretty lively - could be a surprise and get to the final, but it won't go further !! 2,5
Sister Twister - Love At The First Sight
• Like the opening, fresh, lively. The song has a good melody, the only negative is the repetition and it can be a bit monotonus as there is little variation ! If this was a competition for a 1 minute song, it would win ! but it's not, and it won't ! 3
Veeti Kallio - Kerro mulle rakkaudesta
• Not a particularly great song, a bit boring actually - too little variation in the melody ! still though it has a good beat, is dramatic in parts, the climax is a bit disappointing. Will not be in the final, and certainly not in Oslo. 2
Maria Lund - Sydän ymmärtää
• what is this ? "Jungle Book" à les 1920s ??? not much to say ...... a non starter 2
Osmo Ikonen - Heaven Or Hell
• good opening, good beat, I could imagine a good staging for this, and it could come across well !! still though the song isn't the strongest . But who ever said the best song has to win ??? it might get to the final - but no further ! 3,5
Kuunkuiskaajat - Työlki ellää
• Love the opening, dramatic, original, fun, could come across very well. Another attempt at a southern European feel.... a nice sing along song, but won't get to the final ! 3
Linn - Fatal Moment
• Another rock type song, good opening, Linns voice isn't that strong. Sounds like a song that was thrown together from a lot of loose ends - not convinced that it's one coherent unit - had potential ... in the first 20 seconds ...... 2
Eläkeläiset - Hulluna humpasta
• A bit wacky, a bit crazy, a bit loopy, a bit impossible to see this get to the final ! 1

Prediction for the final
• Nina Lassander - Cider Hill
• Bääbs - You Don't Know Tomorrow
• Monday - Play
• Antti Kleemola - Sun puolella
• Osmo Ikonen - Heaven Or Hell
Winner ?
• Nina or Bääbs are my choices .....

BlogIlkar thanks Peter for the review and time will tell who gets it right.... :-)

ESC 2016 WISH LIST: MARGARET FOR POLAND

Małgorzata Jamroży aka Margaret has also been tipped for Eurovision and apparently she did turn it down but she'd be perfect. She's got a look and persona you can't unnotice nor forget, she's got hit songs, she has been voted or nominated for everything from Trendy artist to the Hope of the Year, Fashion Icon and Glamour Woman of the year besides the usual best video, song, album, debut..... Oh she's also a fashion designer! She's very clever with social medias and would surely use it to her advantage if selected for Stockholm 2016. Her debut album is titled Add the blonde , do we need to say more? Except it includes mostly Swedish written pop tunes like Tell me how are ya , Wasted , Start a fire and Heartbeat . And of course her debut single and internationally noticed Thank you very much that you can enjoy below with all its anti-textil feel. I think she's Eurovision perfection, she's cheeky and fun, can we have her?

SONGS OF THE YEAR 2015: #5 KRISTA SIEGFRIDS - ON & OFF

Krista Siegfrids is delivering nice pop tunes one after another and this one is particularly catchy and soon you will be singing along..... Hopefully her Melodifestivalen entry will be equally good!

ESC 2016 BELARUS: NAKED WITH WOLVES?

Today's funniest Eurovision related story comes from Belarus. Some sources claim Ivan wants to perform on stage naked and with live wolf or wolves. It surely would be a first on Eurovision stage! We have seen some forgotten underwear over the years, and some cardbox animals though..... Is it time to take things a bit further?  No, according the rules live animals are not allowed, and Eurovision being a family show nudity won't do either. (It seems to be ok to be half naked if you are a dancer though..... )

Regina Lund - naked and censored

Regina Lund's new video Jag är osynlig was censored by Youtube only minutes after it had been uploaded. In the video she was playing a female Jesus who gets crusified in the end. "I was shocked!" she says. "There's nothing more naked in it as in every church! It's ok to have naked man hanging on the wall but my nakedness is too much on internet? ". Oh well, no comment. She's prepairing a new album Dare Regina Lund and we of course remember her from her Melodifestivalen 2007 adventure with Rainbow star .

Russia recycles the video

Here is the video for Alexey's previous hit Бам Бам! and here is the video for his Eurovision 2011 entry Get you as Alex Sparrow as he likes to be called now abraod. Looks like he potreys the new rich Russia well....  The only problem is that he can't play the bad part convincingly not even a second. And did I say the song is crap? And of course as he is a Russian star he must have nude fotos of him flotaing around internet trying to be sexy and he fails there, too, big time. If you are not bad nor sexy you shouldn't push it. Maybe he should stick to singing jolly little numbers like the Kalinka rip off instead....

CAROLA'S BOOBS STEAL THE SHOW, SVT APOLOGIES

Update! Another thing got Swedes talking last night: Carola's boobs when she was giving away an award. This is not the first time her boombs cause headlines; her misfortunate adventures in the 80's in Japan wer explained with her boobs being too big for Japanese market. Ok.... Or was it the song ? Anyways, Carola apologies and says she thinks the dress is stylish and elegant (even her friends said so) and she's a mature woman in her 40s, not a 16-year-old girl and looks like one. The Swedish Oscars, Guldbagge awards were given out last night. Carola was there as a guest star to sing Barbra Streisand's The way we were when honoring the movie stars who passed away during 2012. However, the cameras were too much on Carola, not on the stars showed in photos in the background and that upset many viewers as that part of the show was to celebrate them, not Carola. Oh well...  The producer of the show tells in Aftonbladet the part of the show was made the sam

TIM SCHOU AND HIS NAKED GRAVITY

Tim Schou has a pretty good solo career going since he left his friends in London. He's travelling the world and relesing songs and videos. The latest one is a great track and comes with a steamy video that kinda takes away from the song really. But who's complaining. If you got it, flaunt it. Enjoy the video below. This post coming after the other Dane, Rasmus Seebach as wishlist for Eurovision. To think about it, Tim would do nicely, too. Maybe he should give it another go?

GREECE: HELENA PAPARIZOU HITS AGAIN WITH HAIDE

Eurovision song contest 2005 winner Helena Paparizou has been enjoying Top-5 hits every year since 2003 with the exception of 2010 and 2014, this latest one being already her 27th! And Haide is charting also in Bulgaria and Finland, of all places. The catchiness of her hits has changed less over the years than her face....  Here's the English version , below the Greek version.

CZECH REPUBLIC: MARTINA BÁRTA PRESENTS MY TURN

Czech Republic's internally chosen Martina Bárta has released her entry My turn for the Eurovision as well today. Not sure if I managed to keep my attention level very high for very long when listening to it.... Shame.

MÅNS ZELMERLÖW GETS NAKED FOR THE GOOD CAUSE

Reigning Eurovision song contest champion and the host of the next contest in May 2016 in Stockholm Mäns Zelmerlöw bares it almost all in GT following some other Eurovision stars like Blue and Jedward ( see more here ) All for the good cause of course, prostate cancer - something this blogger can also relate having experienced it in my closest circle. Nothing to laugh about.  The annual Naked issue of GT or Gay Times features also several other celebrity men out of their designer fashion and stage or sports outfits. I guess Christmas came early to some fans when they can unwrap their most wished gift already now.... Maybe.  But it's not the first time he gets naked.... he did so when hosting the annual QX Gala some years ago. Who knows what he and Petra have in store for us in May?!
