After five 2nd places in nine years, United Kingdom finally emerged victorious with their 10th entry (but they would end up in top-2 also the following three years....). Even the hostess Erica Vaal in Vienna's Hofburg Palace's Great Ballroom got carried away and announced barefoot pop princess Sandie Shaw the winner before poor Ireland had the change to deliver their votes - something that would happen again only in the 2010's when sadly winners have been announced while the voting is still going on. Thankfully this is going to change this year. But back to Vienna and 1967....
No debuts, but Denmark withdraw and would not be seen again until 1978..... It seems the new boss of DR entertainment department wasn't a fan and the whole nation suffered...
Vicky Leandros made her debut, as did Finland's Fredi. Fredi's song didn't go anywhere but in the shadows as the title suggest while Vicky's blue love become a worldwide hit and evergreen. She finished however only 4th at the nights as Ireland came second with Sean Dunphy and France third with Noelle Cordier. Portugal sent Eduardo Nascimento, the very first black singer in the contest. Nasty rumors tell it was just prime minister Salazar's attempt to show he's not really a racist.....
Sandie Shaw was very popular at the time, and had already two #1 hits in the UK before Eurovision, that became her third one. Her victory was record breaking (47 points against runner ups 22) but it nearly didn't happen as she was involved in "annother woman" scandal and BBC wasn't sure it would be a good idea. It was in the end. Sandie herself moved on later in fashion and hosting television shows and pretty much retired from pop business in the early 1970's but would be back in the mid 80's with some famous collaborations.
